What is tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis affects the throat’s tonsils and is common in children but can occur at any age. It can be acute or chronic. Strep throat (a bacterial form) is caused by group A streptococci and can lead to complications if untreated.
Causes:
- Viruses (flu, adenoviruses)
- Bacteria (group A streptococcus)
- Low immunity
- Cold exposure, chilled drinks
- Allergies
Symptoms:
- Severe throat pain
- Difficulty swallowing
- Fever (up to 40°C / 104°F)
- Bad breath
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
Diagnosis:
- ENT examination
- Throat swab test
- Blood test
Treatment:
- Antibiotics for bacterial infections
- Antiseptic sprays and warm gargles
- Rest and hydration
- Pain relievers
- Tonsillectomy in chronic cases
